Shopping hub plans for Hayle to be discussed at public meeting

Over 400 people have already lodged their views on the development with Cornwall Council

People will be able to have their say on proposals to build a retail park on the outskirts of Hayle at a public meeting next week.

Walker Developments has plans to create a shopping hub including up to ten retail units at the current Hayle Rugby Club ground.

The proposals, which include shops and restaurants, is in direct competition with Cranford Developments, which has also submitted plans to Cornwall Council for a similar retail park on land off Marsh Lane and has already signed up Debenhams subject to planning.

A public meeting is set to be held in the town for people to voice their opinion on the Walkers Development retail aspirations.

More than 400 people have already given their views on the prospective development to Cornwall Council including Hayle harbour owners ING.

Objecting to the retail plans, the company told Cornwall Council that traffic would increase in the area on the back of either development being given the green light.

“The level of car-borne activity at the West Cornwall Shopping Park is evidence that the car will remain the dominant mode of transport and the suggestion that Loggans Moor and Carwin Rise junctions will both be improved together at day one will simply further encourage an over-reliance on the private car to the detriment of sustainability,” they wrote.

No decisions will be made at the meeting next week but councillors are set to use it as a way to gauge public opinion before the planning application is considered and debated at a future meeting of the Strategic Planning Committee.

The public meeting is due to be held at 6pm on Thursday November 27 at Hayle Community School, High Lanes.

More information on the planning application PA14/02920 can be found at www.cornwall.gov.uk.
